Book The World's Cheapest Destinations: 26 Countries Where Your Travel Money is Worth a Fortune Review :

I've been a budget traveler for over 30 years now, taking short and long trips pretty much my entire adult life. And I'm still going strong at 54 years young, lol. Back in 2003 I was about to take yet another break from corporate American and was planning out a big extended backpacking trip to Asia (ended up being 2 yrs total). During this time I came across the author's first edition of this book, and I've been a big fan of his work ever since (I follow his blog too which I also highly recommend). Most Americans have no idea that there is a great big wonderful world out there to explore for pennies on the dollar compared to what the big travel agencies and expensive tour operators will have you believe. You absolutely DON'T have to be rich by American standards to travel in a significant part of the world, oftentimes for much less money that it costs you just to live your normal every day life in the US.Everytime Tim comes out with a new edition of this book I check it out. This is because things change - things like exchange rates, political climates, mass tourism numbers in the age of Instagram, etc. And even for a salty dog traveler like me who has already been to most of the countries mentioned in this book, he gives me fresh ideas for destinations that hasn't made it to my ever-growing destination list. For example, in this book he talks about Kyrgyzstan which had never come across my travel radar before, and I consume a LOT of budget travel content that's out there. Also, I highly recommend that before people read the sections in the book about specific countries they should first read the section at the beginning of the book titled "It's Not How You Go, But Where!" The FAQ's in that section are golden and spot on target. If you want to want to travel to some excellent destinations around the globe on a budget while still having the time(s) of your life, buy this book and maybe sign up for some credit cards that offer big airline point bonuses (think free flights). Doing these things can literally change your life for the better on many more levels than can possibly be properly discussed in an Amazon book review.
I've been so lucky to travel internationally for over 35 years, always drawn toward less traveled paths, and Leffel's writing helps me remember why I loved it in the first place, and how to dream again about trips where I'll discover something new. All that inspiration and joy and energy is hidden behind a book with the word "cheapest" in its title. A bit subversive, compelling, kinda brilliant. Like the first Tim Leffel travel book I read and loved, A Better Life at Half the Price, the 2019 edition of World's Cheapest Destinations is full of well organized, practical info. It's more than up-to-date pricing and value analysis. It's a snapshot of 26 countries with insight and tips on what to see, what not to see, what's not there to see. Clear, succinct, direct and easy to read. His writing stokes my love of travel while not getting dragged down by the expense of it all - to stay away from those over-priced places with lines and crowds and ridiculous prices - and go see the rest of the world!
